Texts and translations

Quam pulchri sunt

Quam pulchri sunt gressus tui,
filia principis!
collum tuum sicut turris eburnea,
oculi tui divini,
et comae capitis tui
sicut purpurea regis.
Quam pulchra es,
et quam decora, carissima!
Alleluia.

How beautiful are your footsteps,
O prince's daughter!
Your neck, like a tower of ivory;
Your divine eyes;
And the hair of your head,
like a king's purple.
How beautiful you are,
and how gracious, dearest one!
Alleluia.

Ne timeas, Maria

Ne timeas, Maria:
invenisti enim gratiam
apud Dominum:
ecce concipies, in utero
et paries filium;
et vocabitur Altissimi filius.

Fear not, Mary:
for you have found grace
with the Lord:
behold, you will conceive,
and bear a son;
and he will be called son of the Most High.

Ave Maria

Ave Maria, gratia plena,
 Dominus tecum:
benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui
 Jesus Christus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
 the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb,
 Jesus Christ.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Quem vidistis, pastores?

Quem vidistis, pastores? dicite,
annuntiate nobis, quis apparuit?

What did you see, shepherds? Speak,
proclaim to us: what has appeared?

Natum vidimus,
et choros Angelorum
collaudantes Dominum, alleluia.

We saw a newborn child,
and choruses of Angels
together praising the Lord, alleluia!

Dicite, quidnam vidistis?
et annuntiate nobis Christi
 nativitatem.

Speak, what did you see?
And proclaim to us
 the birth of Christ.

Natum vidimus,
et choros Angelorum
collaudantes Dominum, alleluia.

We saw a newborn child,
and choruses of Angels
together praising the Lord, alleluia!

Senex puerum portabat

Senex puerum portabat:
puer autem senem regebat:
quem virgo peperit,
et post partum virgo permansit:
ipsum quem genuit, adoravit.

The old man carried the boy,
but the boy ruled the old man.
Whom the virgin bore,
and afterwards remained a virgin,
the very same to whom she gave birth, she worshipped.

O magnum mysterium

O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent
Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio.
O beata Virgo,
cujus viscera meruerunt
portare Dominum Jesum Christum.
Alleluia.

O great mystery,
and wondrous sacrament,
that the animals should see
the newborn Lord
lying in the manger.
O blessed Virgin,
whose womb was worthy
to carry the Lord Jesus Christ,
Alleluia

Pastores, dicite, quidnam vidistis?

Pastores, dicite, quidnam vidistis?
annuntiate Christi nativitatem.
Noe.

Shepherds, speak, what did you see?
proclaim the birth of Christ.
Noel.

Infantem vidimus,
pannis involutum,
et choros Angelorum
laudantes Salvatorem.
Noe.

We saw a baby
wrapped in swaddling clothes,
and choruses of Angels
praising the Savior.
Noel.

Confiteor unum baptisma in
 remissionem peccatorum,
et exspecto resurrectionem
 mortuorum, et vitam venturi saeculi,
Amen.

Credo
I believe in one God, the Father
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible,
and in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only-begotten Son of God, born of the
 Father before all worlds:
God from God, light from light, true
 God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one substance
with the Father, by whom all things
 were made;
who for us men and for our salvation
 descended from heaven and became
flesh of the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary, and was made man.
He was crucified for us, suffered under
 Pontius Pilate and was buried;
and he rose again on the third day, in
 accordance with the scriptures, and
ascended to heaven, and sits at the right
 hand of the Father.
And he will return again in glory to judge
the living and the dead, and his kingdom
 will know no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, Lord and
Giver of Life, who proceeds from the
 Father and the Son,
who with the Father and Son together is
 worshipped and glorified, and who
 spoke through the Prophets.
And I believe in one Holy Catholic and
 Apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the
 remission of sins.
And I await the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Sanctus
Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus,
 Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of
 Hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus
Benedictus qui venit in nomine
 Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of
 the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

 mundi, miserere nobis.

Four Villancicos

Dadme albricias, hijos d'Eva

¡Dadme albricias, hijos d'Eva!
Di, de qué dártelas han?
Qu'es nascido el nuevo Adam.
¡Oh, hí de Dios, y qué nueva!

Sons of Eve, reward my tidings!
Why should we make gifts to you?
Born is He, the Adam new.
Almighty God, what glad tidings!

Dádmelas y haved plazer,
pues esta noche es nascido
el Mexías prometído
Dios y hombre, de mujer.

Pay my boon, and sing for joy,
For tonight is born our Savior,
The Messiah promised to us,
Man and God, a virgin's boy.

Y su nacer nos releva
del peccado y de su afán.
Qu'es nascido el nuevo Adam.
¡Oh, hí de Dios, y qué nueva!

By His birth He gives us pardon
For the sin and wrong we do.
Born is He, the Adam new.
Almighty God, what glad tidings!

Ríu, ríu, chíu

Ríu, ríu, chíu,
 la guarda ribera:
Dios guardó el lobo
 de nuestra cordera.

Riu, riu, chiu,
 guard our homes in safety.
God has kept the black wolf
 from our lamb, our Lady.

El lobo rabioso
 la quiso morder,
mas Dios poderoso
 la supo defender;
quísola hazer
 que no pudiesse pecar,
ni aun original
 esta Virgen no tuviera.

Raging mad to bite her,
 There the wolf did steal,
But our God Almighty
 Defended her with zeal.
Pure He wished to keep her
 So she could never sin;
That first sin of man
 Never touched this virgin sainted.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Este qu'es nascido
 es el gran monarca,
Christo patriarca
 de carne vestido;
hanos redimido
 con se hazer chiquito,
aunqu'era infinito,
 finito se hiziera.

He who's now begotten
 Is our mighty Monarch,
Christ our Holy Father
 In human flesh embodied.
He has brought atonement
 By being born so humble;
Though He is immortal,
 As mortal was created.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Muchas profecías
 lo han profetizado
ya un en nuestros dias
 lo hemos alcançado.
A Dios humanado
 vemos en el suelo
y al hombre nel cielo
 porqu'el le quisiera.

Many ancient prophets
 Told that He would come;
Now within our own time
We know it has come true
God in shape of human
 We see on earth's domain,
Man in Heaven reigns,
So He wished it done to aid us.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Este viene a dar
 a los muertos vida,
y viene reparar
 de todos la caída;
es la luz del día
 aqueste muçuelo;
este es el cordero
 que San Juan dixera.

He has come to offer
 Life to dead and dying,
He comes to atone for
 The fall of all mankind;
Light of hope, farshining,
 Is he, this baby boy,
Lamb of God, our joy,
Just as good Saint John related.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Mirá bien que os cuadre
 que ansina lo oyera
que Dios no pudiera
 hazerla más madre.
El qu'era su padre
 hoy della nasció
y el que la crió
 su hijo se dixera.

In His wish to please us,
 God could do no other,
Loving us so deeply,
Than make of her a mother.
He who was His Father
 Was born of her tonight;
He who gave her life,
Was His own Son mild and gracious.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Pues que ya tenemos
 lo que desseamos,
todos juntos vamos
 presentes elvemos;
todos le daremos
 nuestra voluntad,
pues a se igualar
 con el hombre viniera.

We have now the very
 One we've always prayed for.
Let's all go as neighbors
 And presents we will bear.
Let's no longer tarry
Our love and faith to give,
Since He came to live
Here among us as our Savior.

Ríu, ríu, chíu, . . .

Riu, riu, chiu, . . .

Verbum caro factum est

Verbum caro factum est
porque todos ós salveis.

Sacred word is now alive,
Since You made the world survive.

Y la Virgenle decia:
«¡Vida de la vida mía,
hijo mío! ¿Qué os haría
que no tengo en qué os echéis?»

Then the Virgin said sincerely:
"Holy Son, I love so dearly,
Tell me, for I know not clearly,
All You do to make men thrive."

Verbum caro factum est
porque todos ós salveis.

Sacred word is now alive,
Since You made the world survive.

¡Oh! riquezas temporales
no teneis nada que darle
a Jesús que entre animales
es nacido según veis.

Riches others may desire,
Jesus never shall require,
Born amidst the angel choir,
Jesus make our hopes revive.

Verbum caro factum est
porque todos ós salveis.

Sacred word is now alive,
Since You made the world survive.
