Program notes

Ave verum corpus

Ave verum corpus, natum
      de Maria Virgine,
Vere passum, immolatum
      in cruce pro homine.
Cujus latus perforatum
      unda fluxit et sanguine.
Esto nobis praegustatum
      in mortis examine.
Hail, true Body, born
      of the Virgin Mary,
Truly suffered, sacrificed,
      on the Cross for man.
From whose piercèd side
      water gushed forth, and blood.
Be for us a foretaste
      in the test of death.

Requiem

I. Introitus

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam,
ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.

I. Introit

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord,
and may light perpetual illumine them.
Unto Thee is due a hymn, O God, in Zion,
and unto Thee a vow is given in Jerusalem
Hearken unto my prayer;
to Thee shall come all flesh.
Rest eternal grant them, o Lord,
and may light perpetual illumine them.

II. Kyrie

Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

II. Kyrie

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

III. Sequenz

1. Dies Irae

III. Sequence

Dies irae, dies illa
Solvet saeclum in favilla,
Teste David cum Sibylla.

Quantus tremor est futurus
Quando judex est venturus
Cuncta stricte discussurus.

Day of wrath, that day.
(when) the world will dissolve into ashes,
as testified David, with the Sybil.

What a tremor is to be
when the Judge is to come
everything is to be thoroughly shattered.

2. Tuba mirum

Tuba mirum spargens sonum
Per sepulchra regionum
Coget omnes ante thronum.

A trumpet of wonders, spreading sound
through the tombs of the regions,
shall draw all before the Throne.

Mors stupebit et natura
Cum resurget creatura
Judicanti responsura.

Death and Nature will be dazzled,
when the Creation will arise
To answer before [Him] who is judging.

Liber scriptus proferetur
In quo totum continetur,
Unde mundus judicetur.

The written book shall be revealed.
in which all is held contained,
by which the world is to be judged.

Judex ergo cum sedebit
Quidquid latet apparebit,
Nil inultum remanebit.

When the Judge will thus be seated,
whatsoever is hiding will appear,
nothing shall remain unpunished.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Quem patronum rogaturus,
Cum vix justus sit securus?

What am I, wretched, to say then?
To what protector shall I turn,
when the just are barely safe?

3. Rex tremendae

Rex tremendae majestatis
Qui salvandos salvas gratis,
Salva me, fons pietatis.

(Thou) king of tremendous majesty,
who freely savest those who are to be saved,
Save me, fount of kindness.

4. Recordare

Recordare, Jesu pie,
Quod sum causa tuae viae,
Ne me perdas illa die.

O remember, holy Jesu,
me, which am the cause of Thy Life,
do not lose me on that day.

Quaerens me sedisti lassus,
Redemisti crucem passus,
Tantus labor non sit cassus.

Weary didst Thou sit interrogating me,
suffered on the Cross, Thou didst save (me).
may such toil not be in vain!

Juste judex ultionis
Donum fac remissionis
Ante diem rationis.

Rightly, O Judge of vengeance,
grant the gift of remission
before the day of reckoning.

Ingemisco tamquam reus,
Culpa rubet vultus meus,
Supplicanti parce, Deus.

I groan like a defendant,
my face reddens with guilt.
Spare (the) supplicant, O God!

Qui Mariam absolvisti
Et latronem exaudisti,
Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

(Thou) who didst absolve Maria*
and give ear to the thief,
gavest me, as well, hope.

Preces meae non sunt dignae,
Sed tu bonus fac benigne,
Ne perenni cremer igne.

My prayers are not worthy,
but, Thou, good, grant me kindly
to not burn forever in fire.

Inter oves locum praesta,
Et ab haedis me sequestra,
Statuens in parte dextra.

Assure me a place among the sheep,
and sequester me from the goats,
standing in the right-hand part.

5. Confutatis

Confutatis maledictis
Flammis acribus addictis,
Voca me cum benedictis.

After the cursed ones have been confounded,
(and) to bitter flames consigned,
call me with the blessèd ones.

Oro supplex et acclinis,
Cor contritum quasi cinis,
Gere curam mei finis.

I pray kneeling and leaning,
with a heart contrite as ashes,
take care of my exit.

6. Lacrimosa

Lacrimosa dies illa
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus.

Tearful day, that,
when man shall rise from the ashes
(as) defendant to be judged.

Huic ergo parce, Deus,
Pie Jesu Domine,
dona eis requiem.

Spare him or her, therefore, O God,
Holy, gentle Lord Jesu,
Grant them rest.

IV. Offertorium

1. Domine

IV. Offertory

Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae
libera animas omnium
      fidelium defunctorum
de poenis inferni, et de
      profundo lacu:
libera eas de ore leonis,
ne absorbeat eas tartarus,
      ne cadant in obscurum,
sed signifer sanctus Michael,
repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam:
quam olim Abrahae promisisti
et semini ejus.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory,
free the souls of all faithful
      departed
from the punishments of Hell, and from
      the deep lake.
free them from the mouth of the lion,
nor let them be swallowed up in Tartarus
nor let them fall into darkness,
but let the holy standard-bearer Michael
restore them into the holy Light,
as once Thou didst promise to Abraham
and his seed.

2. Hostias

Hostias et preces tibi Domine,
laudis offerimus:
tu suscipe pro animabus illis,
quarum hodie memoriam facimus:
fac eas, Domine, de morte
      transire ad vitam,
quam olim Abrahae promisisti
et semini ejus.

Offerings and prayers to Thee, O Lord,
with praises we offer.
Take Thou them for those souls
Of whom we make remembrance today:
Make them, O Lord, pass from death
      to life.
as once Thou didst promise to Abraham
and his seed.

V. Sanctus

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth!
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Osanna in excelsis.

V. Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Hosts!
Heavens and Earth are full of Thy Glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

VI. Benedictus

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Osanna in excelsis.

VI. Benedictus

Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

VII. Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata
      mundi,
dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata
      mundi,
dona eis requiem sempiternam.

VII. Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, who takest away the sins
      of the world,
grant them rest.
Lamb of God, who takest away the sins
      of the world,
grant them rest everlasting.

VIII. Communio

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
      quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
      quia pius es.

VIII. Communio

May eternal light illumine them, O Lord,
with Thy Saints in eternity,
      for Thou art holy,
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and may eternal light illumine them.
With Thy Saints in eternity,
      for Thou art holy.
