Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;
shut not thy merciful ears unto our pray'r;
But spare us, Lord most holy,
O God most mighty,
O holy and most merciful Saviour,
Thou most worthy Judge eternal,
Suffer us not at our last hour
for any pains of death to fall from Thee.
Amen.
Man that is born of a woman
hath but a short time to live,
and is full of misery.
He cometh up, and is cut down like a flow'r;
he flee'th as it were a shadow,
and ne'er continueth in one stay.
In the midst of life we are in death:
of whom may we seek for succour,
but of Thee, O Lord,
who for our sins are justly displeased?
Yet, O Lord most mighty,
O holy, and most merciful Saviour,
deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death.

Ließen und des Engels Worte
Trugen durch die niedre Pforte
Zu der Mutter mit dem Kind,
Fuhr das himmlische Gesind
Fort im Sternenraum zu singen,
Fuhr der Himmel fort zu klingen:
"Friede, Friede auf der Erde!"

Peace on Earth
As they grazed their flock, the shepherds
bore the angel's salutation
through the lowly portal, onward
to the Mother and her Child.
Hosts of Heaven led the hymn,
through the starry spheres resounding,
Heaven led the song proclaiming,
"Peace, O Peace upon the Earth!"

Seit die Engel so geraten,
O wie viele blut'ge Taten
Hat der Streit auf wildem Pferde,
Der geharnischte,vollbracht!
In wie mancher heil'gen Nacht
Sang der Chor der Geister zagend,
Dringlich flehend,leis verklagend:
"Friede,Friede auf der Erde!"

Since that time of angels, warning
O how many deeds so bloody
has that armored horseman, Conflict,
on his wild horse brought forth!
On how many a holy night
sang the choir of spirits quaking,
pressingly yet softly pleading,
"Peace, O Peace upon the Earth!"

Yet survives belief eternal
that the weak shall not forever
fall as helpless victim to each
murd'rers, fresh indignity.
Righteousness, or something kin,
weaves and works in rout and horror,
and a kingdom yet shall rise up
seeking Peace upon the Earth.

Mählich wird es sich gestalten,
Seines heil'gen Amtes walten,
Waffen schmieden ohne Fährde,
Flammenschwerter für das Recht,
Und ein königlich Geschlecht
Wird erblühn mit starken Söhnen,
Dessen helle Tuben dröhnen:

Slowly shall its form develop,
holy duties while fulfilling,
weapons free of danger forging,
flaming swords for cause of Right.
And a royal line shall bloom
mighty royal sons shall flourish,
whose bright trumpets peal proclaiming,
Peace, O Peace upon the Earth!

für unsre Sünd gegeben,
er ist wieder erstanden
und hat uns bracht das Leben;
des wir sollen fröhlich sein,
Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein
und singen Halleluja,
Halleluja!

Verse 1
Christ lay in the bonds of death
surrendered for our sins.
He has risen again
and has brought us life;
we must be joyful for this,
praise God and be grateful to Him,
and sing Hallelujah.

Versus 2
Den Tod niemand zwingen kunnt
bei allen Menschenkindern,
das macht alles unsre Sünd,
kein Unschuld war zu finden.
Davon kam der Tod so bald
und nahm über uns Gewalt,
hielt uns in seinem Reich gefangen.
Halleluja!

Verse 2
No one could conquer Death
among all humanity's children.
This was all caused by our sin.
No innocence was to be found.
So then Death came quickly
and took power over us,
holding us captive in his realm.
Hallelujah!

Versus 3
Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
an unser Statt ist kommen,
und hat die Sünde weggetan,
damit dem Tod genommen
all sein Recht und sein, Gewalt,
da bleibet nichts denn Tod's Gestalt,
Den Stach'l hat er verloren.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
has come in our stead
and has cast sin aside,
thereby taking from Death
all his rights and his power.
There remains nought but Death's form.
His sting he has lost.
Hallelujah!

Versus 4
Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg,
da Tod und Leben rungen,
das Leben,das behielt den Sieg,
es hat den Tod verschlungen.
Die Schrift hat verkündigt das,
wie ein Tod den andern fraß,
ein Spott aus dem Tod ist worden.
Halleluja!

There was a wondrous war
In which Death and Life wrestled.
Life won the victory,
and Death was swallowed up.
The scripture had predicted it,
how one Death consumed the other.
A jest is made out of Death.

Versus 5
Hier ist das rechte Osterlamm,
davon Gott hat geboten;
das ist hoch an des Kreuzes Stamm
in heißer Lieb gebraten,
das Blut zeichnet unser Tür,
das hält der Glaub dem Tode für,
der Würger kann uns nicht mehr schaden.
Halleluja!

Verse 5
Here is the true Passover Lamb,
which God had decreed.
It is high on the branch of the Cross,
roasted in ardent love.
Its blood marks our doors.
Faith stands with it before Death.
The strangler can no longer harm us.

So feiern wir das hohe Fest
mit Herzensfreud und Wonne,
das uns der Herr erscheinen läßt,
er ist selber die Sonne,
der durch seiner Gnaden Glanz
erleuchtet unsre Herzen ganz,
der Sünden Nacht ist verschwunden.

So we celebrate the high feast
with heartfelt joy and delight
that the Lord lets shine for us.
He is Himself the sun
who through the splendor of His grace
lights up our hearts completely.
The night of sin has disappeared.

Wir essen und leben wohl
im rechten Osterfladen,
der alte Sauerteig nicht soll
sein bei dem Wort der Gnaden,
Christus will die Koste sein
und speisen die Seel allein,
der Glaub will keins andern leben.
Halleluja!

Verse 7
We eat and live well
with the true unleavened bread of Easter.
The old sourdough shall not
endure by the Word of Grace.
Christ will be our board
and alone serve the soul.
Faith will live on no other.
Hallelujah!
