A Walk in Beauty: Cambridge’s Musical Luminaries

Saturday, April 29
9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Beauty in front of me, Beauty behind me,
Beauty above me, Beauty below me,
Beauty all around me,
I walk in Beauty…..

So goes an elemental Navajo song, one that reaches beyond the mesas to every human being in the world. We are all looking for beauty, and we can always, reliably, find it in great music. During our annual Walk With Spectrum, we will walk with beautiful music as our companion, learning about composers associated with Cambridge/Harvard who have left us with musical treasures.

The walk will take us to sites in the Harvard Square area—a home, a campus dormitory, a music school, a campus office location—each linked to four well-known composers: Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), John Knowles Paine (1834-1902), Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), and Randall Thompson (1899-1984)—and hear about their lives and their music from members of our chorus. We’ll also hear from Jameson Marvin, emeritus choral conductor at Harvard, about choral music at the university.

We’ll stop mid-walk at the LDS chapel at Longfellow Park, take a break, and participate together in listening to—and singing ourselves—selected samples from each of the featured composers.

The Walk will begin at 9:30 am at the Longy School of Music, 27 Garden Street, Cambridge, and conclude by 12:30 pm at Paine Hall on the Harvard Campus. We will be walking in groups of 15 people—to stay organized and safe (and courteous) on the streets of Cambridge. The total distance of the walk will be no more than 1.5 miles.

Please join us for this special event. You won’t want to miss it!

In Case of Rain: Bring an umbrella. There is no rain date.
