THE SPECTRUM SINGERS HAS A NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR!
The Spectrum Singers is thrilled to announce that Max Holman has been appointed as our next music director to succeed founding music director John W. Ehrlich. The chorus is looking forward with anticipation to this new chapter as Max takes up the baton and we begin planning for our next season. “With his buoyancy, musical intelligence, wit and charm, Max Holman is well equipped to lead us forward,” says Board Chair Dan Epstein.
“I am delighted with the appointment,” adds Max, “and look forward to presenting exciting, beautiful, obscure, and underrepresented music; collaborating with local musicians and organizations in our community; and bringing joy, vitality, and inspiration to our audiences.”
The chorus conducted an extensive search culminating in our current season of three guest conducting finalists, all of whom are outstanding musicians. “It has been thrilling to work with these amazing artists, and while the choice was competitive, we ultimately chose Max Holman for the special relationship he developed with the chorus. We look forward to that synergy bearing marvelous fruit,” says Doug Latham, Chair of the Search Committee.
Max is recognized for his “clear and expressive” conducting, “sensitive” collaborative instincts, and “clever” improvisations, arrangements, and continuo playing. A passionate educator, he infuses practical musicianship skills, musical literacy, and healthy technique into fun and engaging rehearsals through relevant and diverse programming. Max is currently Executive & Artistic Director of the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus, Middle & Upper School Choral Music and Spanish Teacher at Brimmer and May School, and Director of the Five Cities Baroque Festival Youth Academy. Max received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education: Voice from Rutgers University and his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

“It’s our goal to seek out and perform worthy, important music that is rarely heard. As our name suggests, we draw on the whole ‘spectrum’ of masterworks from the Renaissance to the present day.”
— John W. Ehrlich, Founder and Music Director Emeritus
